    1 Update:  I looked at this again with a view to making cautious use of __GLIBCXX__ when the compiler is clang, but __GLIBCXX__ versions are so scrambled up as to be functionally useless, for example looking at https://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/releases.html  I see
